When a fox is spawned from a spawn egg, they seem to ignore dropped items, including those dropped from mobs they kill. This does not appear to be the case with naturally spawned foxes, which pick up items relatively quickly.

Cannot reproduce.
The spawned foxes were in a superflat world, that may actually be the deciding factor. I later spawned some with an egg in a standard world and it was able to pick things up normally, as were the naturally spawned foxes. If this is the case, the title may be misleading.
