My son cloned his character and when he went back to the original account, all of his inventory was gone. He was devastated and I'm really hoping that something can be done to get it back.

I also had that issue so the solution is to always backup the hero after every session
Did you use the copied character or the duplicated one? Whenever you clone a character, on the cloned character the inventory gets wiped and all currency also get wiped (emeralds, gold etc.) The only items cloned are the ones equipped, and they salvage for 0.
