While in the nether, Attacking pigmen will anger them but they refuse to path find to the player. Tested this on Netherrack, nether brick and stone brick with the same results. If you get close to them then they will attack you though.

Were you attacking from a distance? Zombie pigmen only attack a player that is within 35 blocks of them.
