Redstone causes block updates 1 block away
I'm trying to explain it via the signs in the picture this time around, assuming the text is legible. A short description, though:
Redstone causes a block update, in a range of 1 block around it (not diagonally, but horizontally and vertically)
bug 108 is closely related to this, as once this one would be fixed, pistons would't work without update AT ALL (I think).
Edit: finally noticed 108 is resolved; WAI. Not sure if this one is an issue anymore, but I read it had good uses, and I'm kind of inspired. I have to admit this is complicated, though.

is duplicated by
Making a seperate bug report for the redstone update thing, as this is 2 issues. (it said it's unwanted to have 2 issues in 1 report)
I'll link the new one in this comment, as it kind of IS relevant. Please link this as duplicate to the new issue as well, as this is a combo, and no exact duplicate of only 108.

Richard, I've thought it is a bug for a while, but Mojang and a lot of users found it better this way. (for making block update detectors)
Do mind that redstone turning on/off does induce a block update (and at a bigger range as well as described in MC-26545).
Though as far as confirmation goes: Confirmed. (it's issue MC-108)
Caused by MC-26545.

Without block updates redstone wouldn't work at all.
Wasn't sure about the range, though. Sorry to have bothered you.
Glad to know it's working as intended so I can use this knowing it'll stay this way
