This was on mc-creative, a free build creative server. I was using the enchanting table there to enchant a diamond pick. The problem was that when I tried using a bucket of milk and clicked on the diamond pick that was placed in the slot of the enchanting table, after a few times it became a diamond pick! Only after some time did it turn back into a bucket of milk

So you were trying to put a bucket of milk in the enchanting slot, which already contained a diamond pickaxe?
Cannot reproduce with 1.4.5 (Updated)
