I'm not sure if nametags are supposed to be invisible, but behind a barrier the nametags aren't visible.

Invalid as nametags on mobs are supposed to become invisible as soon as you stop focusing on them with your mouse. As [Mojang] Searge (Michael Stoyke) wrote:
Ok, but I thought that the barrier would work as a block that you can't walk through but you can see through, like seeing nametags.
Every block with a hitbox prevents you from directly looking at an entity. It doesn't matter that the barrier hitbox is only visible in creative mode.
