In 1.7, after teleporting, you could get ahead of the server and fall to your death in what would normally be a safe splash pool. (Refer to https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-69383) I worked around this by putting buttons on all portals: after pushing the button, when it finally popped out, you were safe to continue.
In 1.8, the teleportal has turned into a "purple hole": you cannot escape it and you bounce back and forth between one portal and the other. No workaround; no escape.
The big picture is that you need to set up a network-lag laboratory and TEST your "theoretical fixes"...
