OK, so this appears to work when I revert the launcher version to 1.17 and this problem is just a case of Realms not yet being ready for the 1.17.1 pre-release.
If that's the case, you can close the report and I'll add my apologies for misunderstanding this linkage.
Solved this. Please close it. I've made notes about it so as not to get trapped again. Thanks.
