The bug
Upon opening the minecraft.dmg file, a disk image is mounted. This contains the Minecraft application, as well as an alias to the Applications folder. The contents of the disk image should be shown on top of a background, as shown below:
However, this is not shown correctly, and the contents appear to be placed as if they are just in a regular folder:
How to test
- Download Minecraft for macOS from the link: https://launcher.mojang.com/download/Minecraft.dmg
- Run the file
Notice how the files within the disk are shown as if they have been placed in a standard folder (no background) - Press Command + Shift + . to reveal hidden folders
- Navigate to the .background folder
Observe how the background.png file is present

I can confirm that the mounted disk image window does not display the background. Additionally, if you right-click in an empty area of the window and then select "Show View Options", you will see the following window:
That window shows that the mounted disk image window is set to use the default background instead of a custom picture. Lastly, I searched YouTube to see if the background picture used to be displayed in the past, and this video shows that the Minecraft installer used to properly show the background picture in 2017. I don't know when specifically this bug was introduced, but clearly it must have been after the post date of that video (which was January 8, 2017).
I can no longer reproduce. This has likely been fixed.
I agree. I just tested it and the background image is shown now.
