The direction of placement has no effect; the sides of the gate texture are inside out on all of them when opened
Four gates placed from the torch’s location, and then top block was removed to take the screenshot from above
I did a clean install for 1.4.2 just to test if it was fixed and it was still there

In 1.4.1, Fence Gate placed inside 1 by 1 empty block has gate’s texture flipped inside out when opened. Seen in slide numbered 1 and 2
