Fixed. Go to iphone settings>minecraft>default language. Change default language to something other than the recommended language. I chose British English and it works!
Potential fix- go to iphone settings>minecraft>default language> change it to something other than the default american english. Try british english. Try launching it, then you can change the language back in the game settings.
