When traveling through caves I would occasionally see the space a short distance from me turn solid green or blue ( looked like 0, 255, 0 or 0, 0, 255 ) for less than a second, then turned solid black ( 0, 0, 0 ) and stayed that way. The "black wall" looked spherical, and moved with me. It would eventually disappear. I can't make it happen intentionally, but I did see it twice in under 30 minutes. I have attached a screenshot and my options.txt.
I have not tested this under different conditions, I only get about 12FPS on this laptop so I have a difficult time playing the game at all.
I also get empty triangles popping up on the surface of water, but those are too fast to get a screenshot of, might be unrelated, those have happened since 1.5.
When asked to force a crash I saw the black fog about a minute after loading the game. While forcing the crash with F3 + C, the fog dissipated, did not simply disappear, it actually took time and faded away over a couple seconds. I have attached the crash report.

Do you want me to force the crash while I see the black fog? I'll try to get it to come back.
Nevermind, I got it to happen faster than I thought, I'll attach the crash report. While I was holding F3 and C the fog dissapated after a while, but it actually seemed to recede, it was weird.
It says that my Graphics adapter not supported by that driver. I have a hard time with graphics driver installations so I won't try more than that. Not worth risking my entire laptop to get minecraft running better when I have fully functional minecraft on my desktop. Also, I don't think it's a void fog, wiki says void fog appears lower than Y = 13, I've seen this happen at Y = 18. Switching to fancy graphics when this happens does not make the fog dissipate faster than when on fast graphics, but running on fancy does push my FPS from 12 to 8.
All fog appears normal until this happens, once the solid black dissipates fog is normal until it happens again. But the spherical shape does make it sound like a fog issue.
I was able to make it happen again on 1.6.2. Seemed like it took longer this time, but may have been luck. Played several minutes on fancy graphics, then switched to fast. Didn't happen until I was on fast graphics. It is a fog issue, but I don't know if it's only bedrock fog. I built a staircase from Y = 5 to Y = 25 and at 5 it was really close in.
