It is kind of hard to tell due to the already reported chest visual bug, but when you put redstone into a chest or take it out and you don't already have redstone in the chest/inventory, the image is invisible. It is there if you click on what appears to be the empty slot it will appear.
Edit: This appears to be the case with more than just redstone but all items.
If i move a bunch of items into an empty chest they are all invisible, but when I take any item out they all reappear again (by clicking where the item should be)I'm using a HTC Desire C

Oh, also if you drop more than one off, when the tile is invisible it does tell you how many of the item is there.
