Ive experienced this as well and even more alarming the mobs sometimes find themselves suffocating in the wall. I find suffocation happens more often when a baby animal or villager transitions to an adult. i have no way to replicate this but i have experienced it through snapshot 13w09c. but like i said it seems harmless as long as they stay an adult or baby its maturing that allows them to enter a block and suffocate.
very boring. the way i noticed it was simply by my barn emptying to one cow when i had 3. I bred two and when i came back there were two bits of steak and one confused looking cow it almost works as an auto slaughterhouse now but id rather it didnt. ive resorted to a hopper floor to save the unfortunate drops and a 4 cow minimum
