When Shift clicking items into a hopper which feeds them back to the player, a ghost item can be created.
if it is not in the leftmost spot of the hopper, shift clicking the same item in will make more of it.it will disappear if the player tries to grab it.if the playershift clicks onthe itemit will be transferred to his inventory but will disappear when exiting the hopper interface or trying to further interact with it.tested on both creative and survival mode. The Bug
When Shift clicking items into a hopper which feeds them back to the player, a ghost item can be created. once created, the ghost item can be added to.
Recreation
- make a setup that automatically feeds back items you input to a hopper
- put at least two different items in your inventory (works best with 3+)
- begin shift clicking the items into the hopper as fast as you can
- if a ghost item is created, make sure it is not on the leftmost spot of the hopper inventory
- shift click the ghost item over and over to create duplicates of it
- (optional) shift click the ghost items into your inventory, it will appear as though you duplicated them but as soon as you try and interact with them or exit the hopper inventory they will disappear
Note: this works both in survival and creative modes

Note: I have been able to put the ghost items into a container and then break it, which makes these items duplicated, however it was very hard to reproduce and seems like it's based off of pure chance that when you go into the inventory of the container the items don't disappear, however, this should be looked into.

Shift clicking items into hopper can create ghost items, and rarely duplicate them

This is an intended feature, in creative when a player has a full inventory he will still pick up items and they will disappear, which works as intended. You can see that in survival the items don't disappear but fall on the ground. It is only logical that what happens in creative is the items drop on the ground but before they reach the ground they go into your full inventory and disappear, this also matches up visually
seems pretty intended, you can have floating blocks in Minecraft, it's not new, and the grindstone is not the only block which does this (see
MC-204035), seems hardcoded into Minecraft.
