Same on my PS4. Have updated the patch but still can't play with the kids any more on the same local game. It says push L3 to join but nothing happens when you push it. Was great family bonding time until the recent patches...
Local multiplayer on the PS4 has been broken since around December 2020. Every time there is a new update we briefly get L3 working to seemingly join another player, but it is only with P1's saved characters or mirrors. Then the next time the game is loaded L3 isn't recognised and nothing happens. If you use the work around mentioned ("When I am at the character selection, before I enter the game, I go into settings, select game, and select the cross-platform action. Then I back out to the character selection and now I can hit L3 and the second player is added.") then you can again get it accessing P1's saves, but local multiplayer using more than one local profile never works. So our kids and adults can't use their characters to play together. I bought this game for safe multiplayer fun between young kids and parents. I don't want to sign them up for online gaming yet.
If the Mojang team don't see where the problem is then they need to try it on a PS4 using log-ins without microscoft accounts or online access (only one of ours has this). The problem occurs after the game is then updated.
It's been 4 months with little or no comment from Mojang since December. Is there anyone out there???
