You can use the SethBling's MCEdit filter to add hearts on an armor
His last filter, "AddAttribute", apply it on a chest where your armor/item is. Download link : http://sethbling.com/media/5308/addattribute.py
Not fixed in 1.9 (Can reproduce it in 1.9 with the latest NVIDIA drivers)
