I was reading comments from other posts and found that downloading the old launcher works. https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative
I have to play as I am an active staff member of a server. I was told on the MC Chat help site that this would be resolved in 30 mins then come here to see that this has been going on for over 7 hours!
