It started happening when I took my horse out to a village I had walked by a couple days prior. I punched a mob just opposite the invisible wall. It turned red and stayed that way. I tried following the edge of the area and got stuck in a river; had to travel a dozen blocks away before I could jump again to climb back on land. I turned around, and some 20 blocks back the mob I punched had disappeared.
Edit: built a wooden shack at said area to keep myself and my horse safe through the night; got bombarded with potions by an invisible mob when I tried to leave in the morning. Turning away from the area, I poked a hole in the wall and tried to place a block on the ground one square further away. The block flashes briefly and returns to my inventory. Blocks can be placed in any adjacent spot.
Now I live in a 2x2 hole in the ground with a half-dead horse, and my face is getting longer than his.
Same on latest Win10/Bedrock.
