This happens to my device as well. I’m on iPad Mini2, IOS ver.12.2, and whenever I try to open MCPE, it stops loading exactly at the 13th box from the right.
I had the exact same problem on iPad Mini2, and I saw the workaround above in this comments but I didn’t have another device. So I tried just switching off the wifi and booting Minecraft, and that actually worked! I have no problem turning on the wifi and playing after that. I have to turn off wifi every time opening Minecraft though.
