While in a ray tracing capabale world, RTX will randomly turn itself on/off as I move around the world. I first had this issue back in December 2020. A broad search of the bug tracker shows no other people having this issue. There is a video at the bottom of the post demonstrating the bug.

This bug still persists in the latest 1.16.221 version as of 5th June 2021.
It occurs on all of the RTX maps.
The ray tracing video setting keeps turning itself off and back on again, without me going into the video settings (however I can manually go into the video settings and turn ray tracing back on, but it will still eventually turn itself off again and start cycling between on and off states)
Sometimes the RTX world will load with ray tracing turned on from the beginning, other times ray tracing will be turned off from the beginning. Regardless of which state the world loads in with, it will still start this cycle of turning ray tracing off and on again.
I have no resource packs installed, nor do I have any unofficial resource packs/shaders installed from outside the Marketplace.
This bug happens regardless of:
- ray tracing render distance
- upscaling
- FOV
- normal render distance
- any other video settings
- what direction I face
- whether or not I am sprinting/walking
- whether or not I am flying
- time of day
- weather
- game mode
My GPU is not overclocked or undervolted, it's on factory settings. It is a Gigabyte Vision OC RTX 3080. I always keep the drivers up to date. This issue occurred the very first time I tried using Minecraft RTX, which was shortly after I installed this GPU.
I recently updated my motherboard BIOS and flashed my VBIOS to enable resizeable BAR support between my 3900x and my 3080, however this did not change any of the aforementioned behaviours.
Reinstalling the game changed nothing. This is the only RTX title in which this bug occurs for me.
The only thing I have thought of but have not yet tried is switching from Nvidia game-ready drivers to Nvidia studio drivers (since my GPU allows the studio drivers), however since 7 months of driver updates have already failed to resolve the issue, I highly doubt doing this would solve the issue either.
EDIT: I believe it may be happening whenever I cross a chunk border, but I can neither confirm nor deny that yet. It could be that some chunks are 'bad' and force the ray tracing to disable itself, whereas other chunks are perfectly fine and the ray tracing is able to turn itself back on.
A redstone block won't change the direction of a rail unless it is underneath it as shown in the 1st screenshot.
Steps to prove that this is a bug: (see screenshots 2-5)
- Place a line of 3 parallel rails
- Place 1 rail perpendicular to the line to make a T-shape
- Place a redstone block next to the middle rail, then remove it
Upon removing the redstone block, the middle rail will update and turn into a corner rail. So it is clearly affected by redstone blocks, just not in the correct way.

I believe I have found the issue. Ray tracing can be toggled on and off by pressing the semicolon key. This toggle doesn't use any modifier keys to prevent accidental presses.
I am left handed with a mouse and I use a US layout keyboard, so my movement keybinds are mirrored from WASD.
Forward - P
Left - L
Right - Apostrophe
Backwards - Semicolon
So in short, whenever I move backwards, ray tracing gets toggled.
It's just an extremely poorly thought out and lazy keybind choice from Mojang. The ray tracing toggle cannot be remapped, and is not mentioned anywhere in the video settings. It steals keyboard input from keys that are bound to other actions.
So while this is not a bug, this is still something that Mojang needs to fix, since not everyone in the world is right-handed, and it can also be pressed accidentally since it uses no modifier keys. And it's not exactly the most demanding fix in the world.
This isn't a bug, minecarts only bounce off solid blocks, and redstone blocks are transparent.
