MC-409 involves logging out and back in. I'm not sure that's required in this case.
As an additional data point, I forced an update, and only once since then have I thought that something might have gone missing or changed to something else. My original issue took place in the first hours of playing 1.4.2.
This is running on Win 7, Java 1.7.0_09, 6G RAM, many G of free hard drive space, all Microsoft updates applied.
Playing with the trackpad is tough, especially in combat. But I've never had trouble using a 3rd party mouse.
Do check your System Preferences, and make sure Mouse and Trackpad settings look OK. The Primary mouse button should be Left, and... well, I'm on my Mac mini right now so I can't look at the Trackpad prefs. Good luck! (I'm not a Mojang person, FWIW.)
I've also experienced this on my MacBook Pro, Minecraft 1.4.2, Java 1.6.0_37 (64 bit), OS 10.7.5. I was editing text in a command block, and pressing left and right arrow keys would skip by word instead of by letter. I tried also holding control, option, and command, with no change.
