I resolved my own issue here... Numerous uninstalls of the launcher didn't help.. .BUT: when i used the LAUNCHER's built in uninstall of the MCD install, and then reinstalled from there, that seems to have done it. In the launcher, click on the Settings button in the bottom left corner... there I found a Repair button and and Uninstall button. The repair button didn't help.. several tries and it never resolved the issue.. but then i tried the uninstall option on that settings screen, which removed the MCD install without removing the launcher itself... then i used the launcher to reinstall, and that seems to have fixed the issue.
I should note that once it was working, I realized I lost my characters somewhere along the way. I don't know where they are stored, but it is now clear that characters are stored locally on the machine and NOT in my microsoft or xbox account. That's a shame.
