I had this exact same problem I did everything I thought of EXCEPT for saving and leaving however that actually fixed it for me? I was scared to do that because I didn't want the game to save my empty inventory. But just now when I accepted defeat and decided to save and quite the game took longer to load then told me there was a problem saving but before I could choose try again I was on the main menu. When I went back in the world to see what happened I was back in the spot I left before everything happened! I really doubt this is a full proof solution though.
