Performance drops for no apparent reason
I used to be able to play the game fine for as long as I wanted, until a few days ago.
Now the game slows down immensely once in a while, for no reason that I can see. I can play fine for a few minutes, with great performance, and then all of a sudden it drops to single digit FPS.
If I switch to/from fullscreen mode, performance comes back to normal, until the issue happens again after a while. It doesn't seem to be regular intervals.
This of course makes the game unplayable. Sure, I can hit F11 twice and keep playing, but if the slowdown happens when a creeper is around…
I was playing a single-player world, but the same issue happens when I play on a server.
I did try the latest snapshot, and the exact same thing happens. I don't think it's my hardware, as the game plays very smoothly until the problems start. I am not aware of software changes since before I started having this issue.
I induced a crash with F3+c and included the report.
Environment
Ubuntu 12.04, Java 1.6 64-bit

I have the same problem. It all started with snapshot 14w10. It's basically what people (I think) describe as a memory leak in other games. I can play about 20-30min tops and my fps plumps down from 40-50fps to 13-19fps tops.
I have adjusted graphics settings, performance, anything you can adjust. Even tried Java 6 to 8. With resourcepack, without resourcepack. I literally tried everything that came to mind and the issue continues.
However I have the feeling not everyone's got the same issue. A friend of mine, no gaming PC (rather an older model) doesn't seem to have any major issues. However this might be due to the fact, that her fps is already quite low and therefore for her it doesn'T make that much a difference anymore.
I am playing on Windows 7 Ultimate x64, AMD 965 Black Edition, 8GB Ram, AMD Radeon 7870 2GB. THere shouldn't be any issue.
Once I start 1.7.5... I have no issue whatsoever even after being in the game for hours.
I hope this helps.
PS: after reading more comments; YES I definitely still have it in 14w11b! I also had the chance to reinstall my PC and nothing unfortunately helped. So it's definitely not my system, I can rule that one out for sure now.
Your Java is out of date. Please update your Java to the latest version: http://www.java.com/en/download/. Keep in mind that when using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit OS the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Please report if the issue persists with the latest Java version.
Sorry, I have both versions installed and for some reason the latest was not used by default. The problem persists with Java 7. Attached is a new report.
This ticket is invalid as it relates to a modded or 3rd party client/server.
My client is not modded. I launched the game with "MagicLauncher" in order to be able to select the Java version. I've done it again with the "vanilla" Minecraft client launched with the latest Java from the command line. Report is attached.
Is it still reproducible with the new Java?
Yes. I've tried different settings, both within Minecraft and through Java options when launching on the command line, and the issue is always the same, as described above.
Try allocating more RAM to java. The sudden, temporary drops in performance could be garbage collection.
It might also be useful to know what the profiler graph shows is eating up processing power while you're experiencing poor performance. I believe that's mapped to shift+F3 now. While that's up, pushing 1-9 should display more information about each category.
I have 2GB of RAM. Before submitting this report I had tried, with command line options, to give Java a quarter, half, and all of my ram. I never saw a difference in any way whatsoever.
Plus, I had also watched the memory info, and the garbage collection (which I'm assuming is when the amount of memory goes down periodically) seems completely unrelated to the issue.
I took some screenshots of the graphs you mentioned. I hope you don't mind the large zip file… I took some shortly after entering my world, before the issue happened at all, then I walked around until the performance dropped, and I took more screenshots. Then, I pressed F11 twice to go out of and then back in to fullscreen mode (again, the issue is resolved temporarily by doing that. The performance remains poor until I do it) and took more screenshots of the graphs.
The screenshots are arranged in three appropriately named folders within the archive. Hopefully these mean more to you than they do to me
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Much to my chagrin, I had to switch to my least-favorite operating system recently. I haven't gotten a chance to play much, but I haven't noticed any major issues with my current configuration.
I'm sorry I can't test this again right now with the same config as before to see if the current version still has the issue. If I'm ever able to switch back to Ubuntu (and I sure hope I am, soon) I'll be sure to update this if the issue happens again, or to report it again since you'll probably close this for now.
