Minecraft 1.17 Unplayable Lag when upgrading existing 1.16.5 worlds to 1.17
When I upgrade an existing world(saved in 1.16.5 for me) to 1.17, there is unbearable lag, so much so that I can't play the game at all. However, when I create a new world in 1.17, there is absolutely no lag whatsoever, and the game runs buttery smooth. And the world that was upgraded from 1.16.5 to 1.17 was also running buttery smooth in 1.16.5, but in 1.17, it's absolutely unplayable.

Does MC-219639 describe your issue?
Maybe try to add more RAM?...
@SomeonePLaysMC Good suggestion, but new worlds created on 1.17 are running buttery smooth, as is the existing world on 1.16.5. I am only facing this issue when upgrading existing 1.16.5 worlds to 1.17.
If you update a 1.16.5 world to a 1.17 snapshot (for example 21w14a), do you still experience this issue? If not, then update to that snapshot and then update to the release of 1.17 and see what happens.
@SomeonePLaysMC Ok, so I did what you said. I upgraded my 1.16.5 world to snapshot 21w20a(because loading of old worlds was disabled in 21w14a). And, my game was running perfectly in 21w20a! However, when I further upgraded it from 21w20a to release 1.17, the game was stuttering, but this time it was running a little bit better than last time when I directly upgraded my world from 1.16.5 to 1.17. However, the lag is still unbearable in release 1.17, albeit a little bit less.
Try to update it to 21w20a, then to 1.17 pre1, then to 1.17 pre2, then to 1.17 pre3, then to 1.17 pre4, then to 1.17 pre5, then to 1.17 rc1, then to 1.17 rc2, then to release 1.17.
In what snapshot/version does the lag start?
@SomeonePLaysMC Ok, so I did exactly what you said. My world was running smoothly till Pre-Release 2. After that, it gets interesting. I will break it down version by version after Pre Release 2:-
Pre-Release 3: Little laggy, not as bad as 1.17 but still a bit unplayable.
Pre-Release 4: Still laggy, but less lag than Pre Release 3, fairly playable.
Pre-Release 5: Unbearable lag, just like 1.17.
Release Candidate 1: Unbearable lag, just like 1.17.
Release Candidate 2: This one performed a little bit better.
1.17: Unbearable lag again.
Go onto your world in 1.17 that you have lag on, then force a crash by holding F3+C for more than 10 seconds (if you are on a laptop, it's possibly FN+F3+C), then attach the crash report found in ."minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt" to this issue. This will give us a lot of information about what is exactly happening.
More information about how to find a crash report: https://minecrafthopper.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder/
Here you go:-
crash-2021-06-10_00.28.16-client.txt
At the bottom of the crash report, it says that you have more incompatible data packs. The issue is most likely caused by these data packs that are incompatible with 1.17. Try to disable them and see what happens.
I deleted all the datapacks from my world's datapacks folder and opened the world in 1.17. Still lagging like before.
I am having a similar problem with my completely new 1.17 world. I run a multiplayer server. Normally there's an average of 3 of us on. When going through nether/end portals and loading new chucks sometimes the world caps out the RAM (2Gb) and freezes. When I installed a clear lag datapack (kills extra mobs and such on a cycle) it ran better but wasn't perfect. This update seems to generate a much higher amount of lag than previous versions. 1.16.x all ran smoothly on 2Gb in the past.
Edit: This isn't a client side issue - MC-219639 does not describe my issue
So, someone made a comment asking me if MC-219639 relates to my issue, and then promptly deleted their comment. It seems like yes, it does relate to my issue. Here's the link to MC-219639:-
MC-219639 Performance loss after using OpenGL 3.2 core profile - Jira (mojang.com)
Edit: It looks like MC-219639 might not relate to my issue, as per ampolive.
That was me. I thought it wouldn't be related because that refers to newly created worlds, while this issue is about old worlds loaded in 1.17.
So do you have OpenGL 3.2?
And can you go into your ".minecraft/saves" folder, find the folder with your world name, make it a zip archive, and then attach it to this issue? I want to open it in my Minecraft 1.17 to see if i have any lag on it.
check your entity count because that just happened to my 1.16.5 main and it was because something forced my entity count all the way up to over 40,000
And another thing: does
MC-228302describe your issue? I tested it in 1.16.5 and it doesn't work, then i tested it in 1.17 and it DOES work and it generates a lot of lag and i get only 5 fps.MC-228302doesn't seem to directly describe my issue, because I didn't break any shut trapdoors, that might result in lag(if I understand this correctly). Anyways, here's the original zip file of my 1.16.5 world(before it was upgraded to 1.17):-[^NetherLand.zip]
Edit: It doesn't let me upload my world, because the maximum size limit is 10 mb.
Can you upload the world to google drive and then give us the link?
Ok, here you go(this was the original world last saved in 1.16.5, before upgrading to 1.17):-

Ok, thanks for the world! I'll maybe check it tonight (at 20:00 in GMT+1) because now i have a lot of work to do for school.
Ok so i managed to check the world now and what i can say is that there is definitely something up with the world.
When i loaded the world in 1.16.5, i got 25 fps which is kinda low but still playable.
When i loaded the world in 1.17, i got maximum 8 fps, and when i walk the fps cuts in half (i get 4 fps).
I will do more research of this issue and i'll tell you what is actually going on and what you can do to fix it.
Thank you for your report!

I'm sorry I have to come with this but we can't provide support for your hardware here :/
@violine1101 The minimum requirements for Minecraft stated in the website is Intel core i3 3210 @ 3.2 GHz, 4 GB RAM and Intel HD 4000 graphics. My PC does meet the minimum requirements!
Yes. I agree this should be reopened. I couldn't find anything to help, but this might increase your fps:
Turn:
Graphics to Fast;
Smooth Lighting to OFF;
Clouds to OFF;
Render Distance to 6 chunks;
View Bobbing to OFF;
Particles to Decreased;
Entity Shadows to OFF;
Entity Distance to 50%;
Distortion Effects to 30%;
FOV Effects to 30%;
Biome Blend to OFF;
Fullscreen Resolution to 800x600@48 (24bit);
Fullscreen to ON;
VSync to OFF (Optional);
With these settings and without VSync, i am able to get 150+ fps on a new world and 50+ fps on your world, so this should boost your FPS.
Ok, thank you so much for investing your time in this to help me out.
I am also considering using Sodium, Phosphor and Lithium mods when they are released to get even better performance.
