What I expected to happen was...:
To place blocks where I place them. Also, to attack mobs well.
What actually happened was...:
Blocks would place then immediately disappear and be back in my hand, or with stairs, they would place the wrong direction. I also can't attack mobs, nor can they attack me for a short period.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Literally just place a block. Usually a torch or stair and it is clear.
2. Attack any mob and they won't be attacked.
3. Mob will either freeze or continue walking before the game registers you've been hit.
Environment
Xbox, Java edition

It sounds like you're having a case of the lags. Maybe open the f3 screen on Java and view your fps.
Please could you provide some screenshots or videos of this issue occurring whilst the F3 debug screen is enabled? Could you also clarify what platform this occurred on as you mentioned "Xbox, Java Edition" in the environment field of this ticket? It's not possible to have Java on Xbox, so some clarification here would be here appreciated. Thanks in advance.
