At least I believe it to be wood, however I am certain it is not the intended sound
Unable to reproduce. I get the normal wool sound. Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report here.

Nothing unusual there. Not sure what's causing it on your end. For me the sound of walking on wool is the same as the sprint-jumping one.
I had it in 1.5 as well, I am not sure if I am just mistaken. Shall try to record it in a bit.
Are you running over wool blocks or over carpet ?
Wool blocks, with torches on. But I don't think that would make the difference, unless the torches are causing the incorrect sound?
