It didn't work for me either when I used a selector, with my literal user name, it worked fine.
My command was just /spawnpoint @p. Neither inserting relative coordinates nor using other selectors worked for me.
The game is telling me I used wrong syntax.

Spawnpoint does work in 20b. What command did you type?
Works perfectly fine in the latest snapshot.
