Interesting. Tested it again. It seems to happen between 5 and 10 percent of the time and only when going at high speed. Happens in creative more it seems.
Can reproduce in 1.8 in survival. Docked boat in line of soul sand as gently as I could but docked pretty far into boat and jumped to land. After 36 seconds of bobbing in water and stuck in sand, boat broke into sticks/planks. Three more tests with similar results. Tried again with soul sand barely touching boat and boat survived at least 2 minutes (still there as I type this).
My guess is boats docked too far are bumping into the land and breaking after bouncing a while.
Not able to reproduce. Probably fixed with the new boat mechanism.
Fixed somewhere between 15w44b and 1.8.
