I did a bit of testing on this. I uploaded my skin and some screenshots to Imgur because there're quite a few of them: http://imgur.com/a/Q9eDZ
Only the six pixels in the middle of my glasses are translucent, the rest are either opaque or completely, 100% transparent. As you can see, the frame of my glasses sometimes turns translucent as well. It seems to be based on the horizontal and vertical rotation of my head and also my coordinates.
