When the creeper become ally, it won't attack players, but somehow when player walk towards the creeper, it triggers the creeper to explode and damage the player. This shouldn't happen as the in-game description says:

They follow you and explode if an enemy is nearby. I agree that they either shouldn't follow you as closely or you should become invulnerable to damage from them.
