MCL-16555cant launch minecraft version 1.12 or below
I can't launch any version of Minecraft: Java Edition below 1.13 
There is no specific error code or anything. If I use a third party launcher, it says i woudn't have java version 8 installed but i do.

I've had this exact same problem myself and I managed to solve it. Here's how:
For me, the Java 8 executable is located at /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java, yours may differ depending on how you installed Java 8

On my desktop, it was an other path for java, but with a bit of try & error i got it.
