When you have your Launcher open, and a new version comes out, it won't update by it own.
At me:
14w21a came out, I started playing it, then closed it.
14w21b was out, but the profile didn't showed it (settings:"Use latest version";"Allow experimental versions (snapshots)")
Just after closing the launcher and restarting it, it worked

The launcher reads the version list only once at startup:
This is working as intended (or working by design)
