MCL-9840Launcher not launching on Linux Mint 17.3
With GCC 4.9, GCC 65, and GCC 6 from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/ubuntu/test?field.series_filter=trusty (was getting 'CXXABI_1.3.8' not found & 'CXXABI_1.3.9' not found, GCC 4.9 and newer fixes this), getting
./launcher: relocation error: ./launcher: symbol _ZTINSt8ios_base7failureB5cxx11E, version GLIBCXX_3.4.21 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference
It seems like, even though GCC 4.9 and newer are available for Ubuntu 14.04, there was still some ABI differences that still come into play, which would make this work on 16.04 and newer, but not 14.04 and older, if that makes any sense?

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T CPU
nVidia GT430, 1GB video ram

If I remember correctly, this usually means the launcher was built using the newer ABI of ubuntu 16.04 and newer, while the minimum requirements page on the site still lists Ubuntu 14.04 as the minimum version at https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/325948-minecraft-java-edition-system-requirements
Any chance this could be rebuilt using the older "Trusty"-version ABI? While I'm gearing up to upgrade to Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04) anyway, it would be nice to be able to play this while I get things ready, backed up, etc.

Getting the exact same issue. I'm using Linux Mint 17.1 and after installing the new launcher (downloaded the deb from here and then installed with GDebi) I'm not able to run it. It also seems that GCC is the issue. Running ./minecraft-launcher.sh on /opt/minecraft-launcher also gives this
Tried updating libstdc++6 and found out it was already on the latest release. I'm also lost here...
Any help would be greatly appreciated
