While at my mob farm I was able to walk through a 1 black gap multiple time as seen in the video attached I have also had this happen with fall blocks not just 2 half slabs

Did this happen after running into a wall with elytra?
No I landed on the platform with my elytra but didn’t hit a wall or take any damage when I landed
This issue I have also experienced in a cave if I mine one block a foot level and not a head I am able to walk into the gap
