Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
This could be a feature, like the others one that Tommaso comented, like the wooden tools and the lava buckets
Now fixed in 0.8.0, saplings now are fuel.
