Partly confirmed on Windows 10 1.2.10.2.
When I was closer to a desert temple, /locate temple gave me its coordinates, but when I was closer to a witch hut it gave me coordinates that were 99+ blocks away from the witch hut (X offset 32, Z offset 97). (If /locate giving only coordinates near the target is a thing, I never heard it and the wiki doesn't mention it.)
