This is a massive bug with the tridents. Happens with me on 1.2.15 on iPad. I agree, it makes Tridents absolutely useless. (Honestly I wish there was a way to have the crosshair always on. It would make the game much easier in many ways. Especially when trying to aggro Enderman. Please please Mojang add a setting to permanently turn on the crosshair.
