I have also been disappointed that this feature is not implemented. Thought it should be no problem to load characters from another local switch account instead of having "guests".
I experienced this issue constantly when playing in local coop (2 players in total). Frames drop really bad, making the game almost unplayable in coop and ruining the experience.
