This happened to me in the 1.5 pre-release on the default texture pack...
All the paintings are invisible and cannot be broken until you break the block where u put the painting on.
If i relog on the server (local server gigabit connection) It will show the paintings, but removing is laggy.

On servers if im am the only one in the end it will freeze redstone and such, but when there is someone in the overworld it all works perfect
Point for me is that i can rename every block/item in game with the language files but the music discs are not in there. their name is hard-coded somewhere
