Some supported languages doesn't have proper font
Many supported languages (Russian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, Macedonian, Serbian, Ukrainian and some others) have no default font variant, causing it to get rendered with the unicode font, even if it's not enabled, making it look really awkward. Take a look: http://i.imgur.com/M3EekXD.png

Why not resolve it properly? Is it just because dev's don't want to mess with alphabets they don't understand, or afraid to make a mistake in foreign language? Just involve the community into it. There is plenty of hand-made translations that resolve this issue. In fact, this "feature" is the only reason why these translations even exist.

Like I said before, it's the font in general that doesn't function properly, and any user, english or not, can enable and disable the font at will. that it doesn't match the rest of the game's text stile is because it's a different text style, there's a difference between the default font and unicode font, that a number of characters aren't supported in default font is a separate issue, but when selecting a language that has such characters, unicode font gets enabled automatically, and turning it off is your choice.
The issue in this ticket is that it makes part of the game unreadable when enabled:
- Gui scale small.
- Signs from 2-3 blocks distance.
- Scaling chat lower then 60 % (gui scale normal).
I'll reopen MC-101117, if you change the report to "some characters have unicode variant, but not default font".

Please do not mark unreleased versions as affected.
You don't have access to them yet.
Here is a good example.
Well, you should update affected versions.
Updated affected version to 1.9.3 pre-release 3.
I updated the issue to make it more clear. Font do means a lot even if specifically you don't care about it.
Issue is not resolved despite the status. Mods, please update the status.
I don't see why this may be intended. Could you name a reason?
I have a few why it's not.
I didn't resolve it as such, yet I'm not going to reopen it either.
How do I summon a guy who did it?

The reason the unicode font exists is specifically because the normal font does not cover all required characters. That is why I resolved this ticket as WAI.
But it can cover, there is a texture files in the assets. You can even google already done textures for every language.
Adding default font variants for every character would be a feature request. Are you saying there already exist default font variants for some currently unicode font-only characters in the vanilla minecraft.jar?
There is a difference between "every character" (yes, that would be a feature request) and characters from officially supported languages. That doesn't mean that deafult fount should support stuff like emoji. What is does mean that all supported languages should have the same look like the default language (currently they're not and this is not intended behavior therefore its bug).
Pyotr is making quite wide assumptions in order to get into declaring this as a bug. Especially consider that "Officially supported language" could mean just translations, instead of including also proprietary full unicode font rendering. (Note, even if not all glyphs of unicode would need to be supported, all the text in Minecraft is unicode encoded and handling even basics of its rendering is a big project in itself. And since OS/graphics engine already does that well, why bother reinventing the wheel.)
You can make all languages look like default language by enforcing unicode rendering. Or more correctly, even default ASCII characters are then rendered the same way as other characters are.
Considering how large a change (not a fix) the support for more than 256 glyphs by the game's internal renderer would be (yes, required for pretty much anything else than select few western languages), I can understand why Mojang is keeping it simple and limited to just that. That is, there is a simple extended ASCII -only internal renderer, and then there is backing system's unicode font rendering.
The easier way through this might be to make a community effort to create a new unicode font (i.e. true type or such used by the OS/graphics engine) which looks like the ugly and limited default Minecraft font, but covers more glyphs, and then try to get that selectable into the game (feature request, but a small and easy one).
Any explanation why support for some of the languages include proper font while other have to use unicode one (without formatting and issues with visual compatibility) is marked as intended behavior?
Every character in this case means all characters that don't have a non-unicode font variant, so this is a feature request which belongs here.
Not every (even if its technically similar) but for languages which characters already present in-game. This is implemented and implemented poorly. I'm asking for fixing it.
No, you're basically asking to add default font variants of those characters, which is a feature request.
I take some of my earlier words back.. apparently the game now does contain lots of unicode bitmap font data in it, so one would assume it has the code to use them, too.
However, judging from the screenshots and description, this case in indeed an old one, and not a bug really. And it has been "fixed" by providing that "enforce unicode font" option.
That is, as a response to "Any explanation why support for some of the languages include proper font while other have to use unicode one (without formatting and issues with visual compatibility)":
The unicode font is the proper font, for all languages. The default font is NOT a proper font (for anything else but some western languages, and looks bad anyway); if the developers had had some foresight, they would never had implemented that default font's extended ASCII crap in the first place. It was a dead idea 10 years before Minecraft's first line of code was written.
So I'd still say, that the proper solution is to enforce unicode rendering, adjust GUI scale to such that the text then looks readable, and if the style of the font isn't to one's liking, then get a mod for the unicode font bitmaps (supported stuff, afaik). I can live with the one that comes with the game.
What might be a sort of bug is the unicode font's scaling, which makes it look really bad at some GUI scales; any bitmap font looks good only at integer multiple size of the original, and unfortunately, Minecrafts scale steps have some in-between values. However, the scaling would in any case be a separate issue and probably already been reported (a number of times), for which the "fix" could be e.g. to force the GUI scales to such values that look good with the font in use. (For my case, I just select enforce unicode font, GUI scale "normal", and all looks good. Also, selecting scale "auto" and dragging the window for a suitable size can work, but that is not a good solution, really, as it is then restricting the window size.)
Another possible issue might be that unicode text does not get shadowed, like the default extended ascii text does. Again, separate issue. (And the default font's shadowing wasn't implemented very nicely, anyway.) Maybe there is some missing formatting functionality, too. (I haven't seen much such text in the game, so can't say.) That would also be a different issue, not a "doesn't have proper font".
@FVbico
It's a bug that these languages miss proper font since most of Western ones do have it. Could you explain how this inequality may be intended and planned?
@Markku
Yes, this issue is indeed old. I waiting far too long for Mojang to fix it without my intervention.
I miss days when there was no support for foreign languages at all. These days everybody patched their games with proper fan-made fonts (for example: http://mcdownloads.ru/_ld/12/1234.png ) which worked fine. But since Mojang released native support for it... things get worse.
>The unicode font is the proper font, for all languages.
I don't think so. Since unicode doesn't properly support formatting.
>solution is to enforce unicode rendering, adjust GUI scale to such that the text then looks readable
Yes, at least this would be better then now.
This bug may be divided into many other ones but I think its better to keep it as a proper support for other languages.
I feel terrible for being the only one affected by this issue here but I hope that you understand my situation.
Fancy formatting means a lot for many-many server owners. And its simply can't be achieved in my native language. That's sad.
It's not a bug that these characters have no default font variant.
No they don't, selecting them turns the unicode font on which does support the characters that language uses. The western languages don't require such characters, so they don't turn the unicode font on.
Turning the unicode font off is your decision, if things then don't look fully correct, it isn't a bug, as you are the one disabling the font.
One more time:
It's not a bug that these characters have no default font variant and asking for the support is a feature request.
> selecting them turns the unicode font on which does support the characters that language uses.
Define "support". Support like "oh, thanks god at least it works this bad" vs "works like intended i.e. like other languages"?
Could you also define what is a feature and what is a bug? Sadly main page doesn't provide this important definitions.
Marking this as "feature request" will not help at all.
Mojang support clearly states that they don't care about it:
>Please be aware that we are not actively seeking change or feature requests to Minecraft.
https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/920890-
Support characters as in the characters exist in this font.
A bug is a mistake made in the program that is definetly not by the design of the program's creator(s) (impropper rendering, controversial code, etc.)
A feature is something that exists in the program, be it functional or not.
A feature request is asking for something that doesn't exist in the current version of the program.
Mojang support is not the place to post feature suggestions in the first place, reddit is (r/minecraftsuggestions). Also they state not actively seeking, so they do look there every now and then, just not 50 times a day.
I'm going to stop this discussion here, if you want to discuss further, make a post at the mojira reddit.
This is getting ridiculous. The proper method to display unicode characters is with a unicode font. You may not like the unicode font used in Minecraft, but that does not make it a bug. There may be bugs in how it is rendered, and those can be addressed with specific issue reports. Ideally, the unicode font should be improved, all languages should use it, and the old internal ASCII text renderer should be removed entirely.
Multi-language support is probably not a high-priority for Mojang because there doesn't appear to be a lot of demand from the community for it. Most players either use English, are satisfied with the existing non-English language support, or have modded the game to improve support for other languages. If you expect this to change, it's going to require support from the community, which is difficult to gather or demonstrate here on the bug tracker. It simply isn't the appropriate place.
The developers are not experts in all the world's languages and writing systems. Translations are submitted by the community via crowdin. The discussion forum there may be a good place to find other people who are interested in the quality of the unicode font.
