If you goto Realms, Realms tells us it is not compatible, and consider updating. While you should be abled to join ANY server with 1.8.1(-pre1). That means in Realms too.

I think you were just a split second too late, as this just barely duplicated the ticket before it, MC-73061.
Ow btw. The splash was from the Resourcepack I just disabled. I don't know if that bug is reported yet.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but wouldn't this be WAI? Because I remember snapshots and prereleases aren't usually supported by Realms and Realms has always been strict with version numbers(In my experience atleast)
Well, the point is, Realms is still a server, and this is what dinnerbone said:
'This update is compatible with 1.8 servers'
This means that all (fully and vanilla) 1.8 servers (Realms are vanilla servers, so those too) are compatible.
