LAN Connection does not work from PC to MAC?
When I load my world and open it for LAN and my brother tries to join with his MAC he gets this error: "Internal exception: java.io.IOException: Received string length longer than maximum allowwed (18 > 16)".
He got it with 1.4 and after updating to 1.4.2.
When he loads a game and opens it for LAN and I try to join with my PC I just get a "connect" (Timeout) error without more details.
Does joining from PC to MAC and vice versa not work?
We tried it with a "normal" WLAN via our FritzBox 7270 and with a private Hotspot over WLAN from our iPad 3 with iOS 6.
Environment
Win7 64Bit PC and latest MacOSX on the MAC. Java was updated a few days ago on PC and Mac has the latest updates installed, too.

It sounds like your server isn't updated to 1.4.2
I used the latest 1.4.2 Client, no standalone Server.
I can have a PC join a Mac server, but a Mac can't join a PC server.
@Charlie I'm on a mac and have been on a pc server.
I haven't tried it with single player lan though, but I'd just thought I'd say that it does work with actual servers.
I might be able to test this later today.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
I'm still having general problems like hosting a server on 0.0.0.0:[PORT].
LAN is just broken in general for me...and between Mac and PC.
In that case I'll summarize LAN problems in
MC-3198.
