It's possible you had a weak internet connection, or it timed out. Try the download again, but it is not a bug related to minecraft. This type of problem should be reported on the minecraft forums.
There are known issues with some anti-virus software packages (i.e AVG, Norton) that prevent Minecraft from updating itself. Try temporarily disabling your virus protection and attempt to update. Note you might need to restart your computer before it works.
