MCD-4026PS4 characters deleted when changing skin
On the PS4, when loading a second player, accidentally pressing the square button to change skins, then cancelling, deletes your character.
My 5 year old is in tears after his THIRD level 100+ character was deleted when joining me on local co-op. I hoped that this was fixed with the DLC.
This has been an issue since launch.

Second time my kids lost a character! This time it was level 160. It is absurd that not only a bug of this severity has existed this long, but there isn't even a work around such as by auto-backing up and allowing restores. On the PS4 there is nothing you can do.
The entire point of the game is to level up. This makes the game unusable.
Has the QA team reproduced it? Have the developers looked at other similar character loss bugs for hints (we might have actually been hit by the skin change and cancel bug: MCD-4026)
My children lost 2 characters to this exact bug! We just lost my son's level 160 character, and weeks ago my daughter lost her level 140 character. She was in tears!
It is absurd that this bug is still present.
1) it makes the game unplayable. We will never play it again.
2) it is reproducible. Your QA team should be able to easily reproduce it.
3) There is no work around - On the PS4 there is no option to back characters up. There isn't a recovery option.
If my engineering team at work had a bug like this, we would be working continuously to fix it. It might seem like a small bug based on the activity of this ticket, but there are other active threads about PS4 character deletions which are probably related.
This software is extremely buggy on the PS4 and Mojang should truly be embarrassed for their negligence in not properly testing it before releasing it to the public. I have 2 children that play this game since getting it 4 weeks ago for a birthday gift. We too have experienced the loss of characters, I was not sure how it happened until playing it with my kids. I found that it usually occurs when trying to play in co-op mode, and trying to add another character to the game most times will not load a character it presents you with creating a new character, but if you do this it erases the current character on the account, which immediately puts you into the choosing skin screen and you now have a lvl 1 character, not the one you have been playing for weeks. You would think this would be ok because on character selection screen there seems to be room for 4 characters on each account, however, because it's buggy it erases your previous character with no warning.
