The text JavaScript is required" is an active browser link which opens fine with my default browser and tells me I am running JavaScript. So the launcher appears to be using a different browser than my system default.
There are no errors in the launcher log (in my case). But then there wouldn't be, because the page being displayed is a valid 200 successful web page. Just one that happens to detect JavaScript is disabled. But that is not an error as far as the browser is concerned.
I seems like the old v1 launcher is no longer maintained as the bug was marked as Legacy not long after I posted the report.
I switched to using MultiMC which I feel is a lot more useful and intuitive than the v2 launchers for Linux.
Oh yeah the Wiki has 2.1.5 as the latest launcher version for Linux. With 1.6.91 being the last ever 1.x version, a year ago. I guess I haven't played on Linux for over a year. Thanks for the info!
