Kelp growth is a lot slower than in 1.16.40
Steps to reproduce
- Set randomtickspeed to 0.
- Plant a bed of 500 kelp with several blocks of water above to allow room for growth
- Start a stopwatch and set randomtickspeed to 1.
- After 1 minute set randomtickspeed back to 0.
- Count how many kelp growths you got.
Expected results
About 146 kelp growths. (Based on 1.16.0 changelog stating 100% chance of growth/tick: 500 plants * 1/4096 chance of each block being ticked on each tick * 1200 ticks/minute = 146.)
Actual results
A lot less than 146 kelp growths (less than half that number).
Kelp growth in automatic farms has slowed to a crawl. Unsure if this is intended.

Are you using any mechanics to speed up Kelp's growth? I compared 1.16.40 with 1.16.100 using a simple farm and it produces about the same amount of Kelp in both versions.

In 1.16.100 the kelp growth rate was changed to match Java. That would explain why the kelp farm here produces less than it did a few months ago. Kelp now grows at 42% of the rate that it grew prior to 1.16.100. See MCPE-106261.

My kelp farm has 60 plants. It now produces an average of 10 kelp per minute.
I’ve noticed a slowed growth rate as well with my kelp farm after the 1.16.100 update.
I've experienced this too, my kelp smelter had to be turned off. I wonder how they broke this.
Could you please attach a video/world with your kelp farm to this ticket?
I’m having the same issue in 1.16.201. My 240 plant Kelp farm used to produce more then 5760 Kelp per hour. Enough to max out eight Smokers with the overflow going to a Composter to make bone meal. Now six of my Smokers have stopped as the Kelp harvest is much less. So it’s less the 1440 Kelp per hour now.

Confirmed and updated based on test outlined in the description.
After testing 5 groups of 100 kelp for 1 minute each, I got a total of 64 growths instead of the expected 146. That's about a 3/7 chance of growth with each tick. That matches the realtime growth rate of kelp on Java, if the wiki is correct that Java kelp has a 14% chance of growth when ticked. So it's possible an unannounced parity change was made in 1.16.100.
In my tests I did not see any evidence that the kelp growth bugs from 1.14 had reverted (
MCPE-57330andMCPE-60156).Something that might be affecting the output of larger farms apart from this issue, are the 1.16.0 changes to how items are pushed by pistons, and to the hopper collision box. I noticed in one old test world that kelp was getting stuck under the edge of a hopper, and under the pistons I used to break it, in ways that it did not in 1.14.
Thank you for your report!
However, this issue is Working as Intended.
Closing this as Kelp growth speed now matches Java (
MCPE-57330).Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.
