Custom items are rendered too large in third person view
In the latest version, I have found a custom items rendering bug where some items are too large for the player's hand, like this custom sword. It seems to only work with items with a purpose or items with the resolution being over 16x16.

Various seemingly random items, when made higher resolution in a texture pack, scale improperly and appear huge in the player's hand. This is not a duplicate of MCPE-120618, as this impacts vanilla items, not custom created addon items. No item models or other files were changed for this to happen - simply the texture file. Tested on Windows 10 and iOS. I confirmed that this issue was not present in 1.19.83, so it likely started some time in the 1.20 previews.
In the example screenshot, the string texture has been scaled up to 64x64 to demonstrate the issue.
Expected behavior: Increasing the resolution of an item texture should cause the item to remain the same size, but have a higher pixel density.
Actual behavior: Increasing the resolution scales the size of particular items, resulting in huge items when held. So a 64x64 texture will appear four times larger in width/height than it should be.
How to replicate: Apply the item scaling test pack below, or use your own texture pack where items are at a non-default resolution. The test pack has increased the size of all item textures to 4x their default resolution, and made no other changes. In-game, view one of the listed items below in third person (also somewhat visible in first person).
Impacted items: (these are the items that I have so far discovered, however there may be more)
- Brewing stand
- Cake
- Campfire
- Chain
- Charcoal
- Coal
- Flower pot
- Hopper
- Kelp
- Music discs (all)
- Nether sprouts
- Redstone comparator
- Redstone repeater
- Snowball
- String
- Sugarcane
I thought I'd try this myself with 1.20.50 now released and it's still there. I'm pretty sure this issue and MCPE-120618 Custom items are rendered too large in third person view - Jira (mojang.com) are the same bug as the issue seems to only apply to items with a format version of about 1.16.100 or higher. Thing is, none of the affected items listed in the description have publicly available json configuration from what I can see.
That is until now. As of 1.20.50 the Apple item was updated to format 1.20.50 (see bedrock-samples/behavior_pack/items/apple.json at main · Mojang/bedrock-samples · GitHub), and as of this update at least (I haven't checked older), it is also affected by this bug:
I had hoped that if there was at least one official item with a more recent format version that I could see how to fix custom items that use features that have more recently been available in newer versions without forcing me to also use 16x16 resolution textures. Sadly, the update to the apple has confirmed that apparently not even vanilla items can be correctly configured to work with both a recent item format version and any texter pack with a higher resolution than 16x16.

Think i've found the culprit, it's the new "minecraft:render_offsets" property that's causing issues. This doesn't seem to affect any items with a format version lower than 1.16.100 (needs more testing)
Resolving temporarily as Awaiting Response. Could you please attach the add-on you're using to this ticket?
Problem solved! You just have to adjust the position, scale and rotation as you wish and voila!
"minecraft:render_offsets": {
"main_hand": { //off_hand
"first_person": {
"rotation": [ 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ],
"position": [ 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ],
"scale": [ 0.05, 0.05, 0.05 ]
},
"third_person": {
"rotation": [ 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ],
"position": [ 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ],
"scale": [ 0.05, 0.05, 0.05 ]
}
}
}
It works thanks to Fabián Marín 😀
Yes, adjusting the render_offsets property can correct the items, however i beleive the default state of the custom items should be automatically adjusted down as they were before this property was introduced.
Still affects versions 1.19.51 and 1.19.70 preview
This also seems to affect some vanilla items, not just custom ones.
I retextured the vanilla music disc "Blocks" with a 256x256 texture. The item in the image is being held by an armour stand, this behavior is also observable in the players hand while in both 1st and 3rd person modes. This was taken in game version 1.20.51
This bug is still in effect in 1.20.60. Here is a screenshot with a 32x32 item. This also seems to affect vanilla items now if you retexture them to be high resolution.
still in 1.21
Still an issue in 2025. Why is this bug not being fixed?
