This is working as intended, see MCPE-49963.
It is intended that food can be eaten in Peaceful mode, see the 1.7.0 update changelog.
Since you mentioned that it also happened when you interacted with a block, it is very likely you were in Peaceful mode, so I will close this ticket as a duplicate of MCPE-49963.

Were you in peaceful difficulty? Per MCPE-49963 you are able to eat in both creative and peaceful difficulty which would explain what you saw but you also mention hitting Zombies (which wouldn't be peaceful).
This report will be placed in Awaiting Response but will reopen as soon as you reply.
I was in peaceful mode. My reference to Zombies was normal game play on higher difficulties. I like using food as weapons sometimes. Thank you for referencing MCPE-49963. I guess in the past 3 years, I have not used peaceful mode 
, but for testing the beta version, I did.
